Privacy policy
The app keeps your games and your settings on your own device, and sends none of them to anyone. Its ads come from Google, which uses cookies to show them. This page explains what is kept, who receives what, and the choices you have.

Who runs this site
This site, selabackgammon.com, and the Shesh Besh app on it are run by Sela Goldenberg, as a private individual. For any question about privacy, or to use one of the rights described below, write to privacy@selabackgammon.com.
The app itself sends the owner nothing about you: it has no accounts, and the owner keeps no data about the people who use it. The owner sees only totals, such as how many visits the site gets and how the ads perform, never who you are. The only personal data that reaches the owner is an email you choose to send.
What the app keeps on your device
To work as you expect, the app keeps a few things in your browser's storage for this site. They stay on your device and are never sent anywhere:
- The saved match: the players' names, the match length, the score, the position on the board and the moves of each game so far, so that you can continue the match where you left it. It is deleted when the match ends, or when you start a new match in its place.
- The settings: the language, the switches in Settings (automatic roll, table mode, sounds and vibration), and the names and length of the last match you set up, so that the app opens the way you left it.
- Two details about the ads: whether you have closed the notice about the ads, so that it shows only once, and when you last saw a full-screen ad between games, so that the next one waits at least five minutes.
The browser also keeps a copy of the app's own files, so that the app opens without a network. That copy holds nothing about you.
All of this stays until you delete it, which you can do by clearing this site's data in your browser's settings. The app then starts afresh, as on a first visit.
Google's ads
The app shows ads from Google AdSense: a banner when a game ends, and a banner on the How to play pages. It may also show a full-screen ad between two games. These privacy pages show no ads.
As a result of the ads, third parties, Google among them, may place and read cookies in your browser, or use web beacons and your IP address, to collect information. In particular:
- Third-party vendors, Google among them, use cookies to show you ads based on your earlier visits to this site or to other sites.
- Google's advertising cookies let Google and its partners show you ads based on your visits to this site and to other sites on the internet.
- You can opt out of personalised advertising in Google's ad settings. You can also opt out of other vendors' use of cookies for personalised advertising at aboutads.info.
Ads that are not personalised may still use cookies, for instance to limit how often you see the same ad and to count the ads shown. Besides Google, the ads may come from other advertising companies that Google has certified; Google lists them on its page of vendors certified for third-party ads.
Google explains how it uses the information it receives from sites like this one on its page How Google uses information from sites or apps that use our services.
Your choices
No law obliges you to give any data: it is up to you. If you refuse, the only difference is that the ads you see are not personalised. You can play everything just the same.
- Visitors from Europe (the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland) get Google's consent message, where they can consent, refuse (Do not consent), or choose purpose by purpose (Manage options). To change the choice later, use Privacy and cookie settings in the app's Settings, or at the bottom of a How to play page: it opens Google's message again.
- Everyone else sees a short notice about the ads once, on Home or on a How to play page, before the app asks Google for any ad. To turn off personalised ads, use Google's ad settings or aboutads.info, as above.
Your browser's own settings can also block or delete cookies, Google's included.
Counting visits
To know how many people visit the site, which countries and sites they come from and on which devices, the site uses Cloudflare Web Analytics. It uses no cookies and keeps nothing on your device. Cloudflare states that it does not use visitors' IP addresses or browsers to recognise them, and does not follow anyone from site to site. When a page loads, Cloudflare receives the page's address, the page you came from, the type of your browser and how long the page took to load, and works out your country from the connection. The owner sees only totals.
Visitors from Europe are not counted. The site starts counting only once Google has reported that its consent message does not apply to the visitor. Where it applies, or where that cannot be known, for instance because the browser blocks Google's scripts, nothing is counted.
Writing to the owner
When you write to privacy@selabackgammon.com, the owner receives your email address and your message, and uses them only to answer you and to deal with your request. Cloudflare forwards the message to the owner's own mailbox.
Who receives data
- Google and its advertising partners, through the ads, as described above. Google uses the data on its own responsibility, under Google's privacy policy.
- Cloudflare, which hosts the site. Like any web host, it receives each request your browser makes to the site, with your IP address, in order to deliver the pages and protect the site from attacks. It also counts visits, as described above, and forwards the emails sent to privacy@selabackgammon.com.
- The owner, only if you write, and the email provider that holds the owner's mailbox.
Data sent outside Israel and Europe
Google and Cloudflare are American companies. The data they receive may be processed in the United States and in other countries outside Israel and the European Economic Area. For data from Europe, both rely on the EU–US Data Privacy Framework, under which they are certified, and on the European Commission's standard contractual clauses. Google explains this on its page on data transfer frameworks, and Cloudflare in its privacy policy.
How long data is kept
- What the app keeps on your device stays there until you delete it, as described above. The saved match goes once the match ends.
- Google keeps advertising data under its own terms. How long its cookies last is on Google's page How Google uses cookies, and how long it keeps data, on its page How Google retains data we collect.
- Cloudflare keeps request and visit data as its privacy policy describes.
- An email you send is kept only as long as it is needed to deal with your request.
Legal bases, for visitors from Europe
Under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), each use of data needs a legal basis:
- What the app keeps on your device is needed to give you what you ask for: your match, your settings, and full-screen ads no more often than once every five minutes. It rests on the owner's legitimate interest in providing the app as it is meant to work (Article 6(1)(f)). Keeping it on your device is strictly necessary for that, so under the ePrivacy rules it needs no consent.
- Google's cookies and personalised ads rest on your consent (Article 6(1)(a)), which you give or refuse in Google's consent message, and can withdraw there at any time. For some purposes, such as measuring the ads, Google and its partners may rely on their legitimate interests instead (Article 6(1)(f)). The message shows these under Manage options, where you can object to them.
- Delivering the pages through Cloudflare rests on the owner's legitimate interest in a site that works and is secure (Article 6(1)(f)).
- Answering your email rests on the owner's legitimate interest in answering you (Article 6(1)(f)), or, when you use one of your rights, on the owner's legal obligation to deal with the request (Article 6(1)(c)).
Visitors from Europe are not counted, so counting visits needs no legal basis for them. Personalised ads are chosen from a profile of your interests that Google builds, but no decision with legal or similarly significant effects on you is made from it.
Your rights under Israeli law
Under the Protection of Privacy Law, 5741-1981, you may see the data about you that the owner holds (section 13), and ask for data that is not correct, complete, clear or up to date to be corrected or deleted (section 14). The owner holds no data about you except an email you sent. For such a request, write to privacy@selabackgammon.com.
What the app keeps on your device you can see and change in the app itself, or delete as described above. For the data Google holds, use the tools described in Google's privacy policy.
Your rights under the GDPR
If you are in Europe, you have the right:
- to access the data about you;
- to have it corrected (rectification);
- to have it erased;
- to restrict its use;
- to object to its use, including any use based on legitimate interests;
- to receive it in a form you can take to another service (portability);
- to withdraw your consent at any time, through Privacy and cookie settings, without affecting what was done before you withdrew it;
- to complain to a data protection supervisory authority, in particular in the country where you live or work: see the authorities of the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom's ICO and Switzerland's FDPIC.
To use these rights with the owner, write to privacy@selabackgammon.com. With Google, use the tools described in Google's privacy policy.
Children
The app is made for a general audience, and is not directed at children under 13.
Changes to this policy
If the app or its ads change in a way this page should tell you about, the page will change too, and so will its date at the top.
